Descript vs ICONS DIY is a choice between an editing app and a podcast workspace. Descript is free or $16 to $50 per person a month billed annually (October 2026), and edits audio and video by editing text, so it suits agents who edit themselves. ICONS DIY is free and joins recording, review and hosting behind one sign-in.

How do Descript and ICONS DIY compare at a glance?

Descript and ICONS DIY cover different parts of running a show: Descript records and edits, while ICONS DIY records, reviews and publishes, with team roles. The table draws on Descript’s own pages as they stood on October 9, 2026, and on the ICONS DIY page.

What does Descript cost?

Descript’s basic plan is free; paid plans begin at $16 per person a month billed annually or $24 on monthly billing (October 2026 prices). On October 9, 2026, the Descript pricing page listed:

  • Free: $0. It includes 1 media hour a month, 100 AI credits one time and 720p export with a watermark.
  • Hobbyist: $16 billed annually or $24 billed monthly, with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month and 1080p export.
  • Creator: $24 billed annually or $35 billed monthly, with 30 media hours, 800 AI credits and 4K export. It scales to a team of 3, billed separately.
  • Business: $50 billed annually or $65 billed monthly, with 40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits. It scales to a team of 5, and adds team-wide Brand Studio.
  • Enterprise: custom.

Descript’s help center says unused media minutes and AI credits don’t roll over. Annual billing saves “up to 35% over monthly plan,” per the pricing page.

What does ICONS DIY cost?

ICONS DIY is free, with no plan tiers and nothing to buy. To get in, ask for an invitation on the ICONS DIY page, which has a form for it; sign-in links go only to people already on a show’s team or invited by ICONS.

The product page describes ICONS DIY as a podcast workspace for agents, brokers, investors and lenders who host their own show. You sign in with an emailed link that works once and expires after 15 minutes, with no password. The top menu shows the ICONS tools your role allows: ICONS Live for recording, ICONS Review for comments and ICONS Podcast hosting for the show and its feed.

What does each do for recording and editing?

Descript does recording and editing, while ICONS DIY does recording but leaves editing out. Its recorder, Descript Rooms, is “a remote recording studio that runs in your browser,” where “every participant gets a separate file, recorded on their own machine in up to 4K.”

Editing is the core of the product:

  • Text-based editing. Descript calls itself “an AI video and audio editor that lets you edit by editing text.”
  • Studio Sound. One-click “background-noise removal and voice enhancement.”
  • Filler words. Remove “ums,” “uhs,” “likes” and “you knows.”
  • Clips. “Create Clips” finds highlights for social posts.
  • AI voices. A voice clone in about 60 seconds, per Descript’s AI voices page.

ICONS DIY opens ICONS Live from its menu, where each person is recorded separately in the browser. The ICONS DIY page is plain about editing: “There is no video editor in ICONS DIY.” If you want to price editing as a service, see how much podcast editing costs.

Who covers review, hosting and team roles?

ICONS DIY covers review, hosting and team roles that Descript leaves to other tools. Descript includes commenting and live collaboration on all plans. On hosting, it says “You can even publish your podcasts directly to your favorite hosting service,” and its help center lists hosts including Buzzsprout, Captivate, Podbean and Transistor. Its pages checked didn’t describe Descript hosting your RSS feed itself.

ICONS DIY brings the rest together:

  • Review. ICONS Review holds comments on a recording before it is published.
  • Hosting. Your show, its RSS feed, publishing, download stats and listing status sit in ICONS Podcast hosting; the feed apps read is audio.
  • Roles. Five roles, Owner, Co-host, Editor, Assistant and Reviewer, are checked on every action, not just hidden on screen.
  • Several shows. One sign-in can belong to several shows, each with its own team, which suits brokerages.
  • Team activity. A team activity list shows who changed what.

Where Descript does more

Descript wins for an agent whose main problem is the edit itself. These are real advantages:

  • Editing by transcript. It is a quick way for a non-editor to cut an interview.
  • AI clean-up. Studio Sound, filler word removal and clip creation are built in.
  • 4K export. Creator and Business export video up to 4K.
  • AI voices. Voice cloning can fix a word or two.
  • More languages. Transcription covers 25 languages.
  • Publishing integrations. Episodes export straight to many podcast hosts and YouTube.
  • Start today. The free plan needs no invitation.

Where ICONS DIY does more

ICONS DIY does more as the place a show is run from, especially with a team. Its advantages:

  • Free, with no media hours or credits to track.
  • Recording, review and hosting in one menu, with one sign-in and no passwords.
  • Enforced roles. An assistant can’t do an owner’s job by finding the right link.
  • Several agents’ shows under one sign-in, for brokerages and agencies.
  • Your feed included. ICONS Podcast hosting publishes the show and counts downloads.
  • An exit to done-for-you. If you stop doing it yourself, ICONS podcast production can take over.

Which fits your show?

Descript fits an agent whose bottleneck is editing; ICONS DIY fits one who needs a home for recording, review and publishing with a team. They can work together: record in ICONS Live, edit in Descript, publish in ICONS Podcast hosting. Three ways that plays out:

  • Solo agent starting out and editing alone: Descript Free or Hobbyist for editing, plus a host for the feed. Ask about ICONS DIY if you want recording and hosting in one place.
  • Team or brokerage running one or more shows: ICONS DIY, for roles and several shows under one sign-in. Add an editor, in Descript or elsewhere.
  • Agent already editing in Descript: keep it. ICONS DIY doesn’t replace the editor; it replaces the separate recording, review and hosting accounts.

Before you commit hours to doing it yourself, weigh the time cost in producer vs DIY for a real estate podcast, then run the launch checklist for realtors. The sibling comparison, Podcastle (now Async) vs ICONS DIY, covers the all-in-one app route. The pillar, starting a real estate podcast, walks the whole path, and ICONS Podcast Production is the hands-off route.

Frequently asked questions

Is Descript free?

Descript has a free plan. As of October 2026 it lists 1 media hour a month, 100 AI credits one time and 720p export with a watermark. Paid plans start with Hobbyist at $16 per person a month billed annually, or $24 billed monthly.

How do I get ICONS DIY?

ICONS DIY is free. Ask for an invitation through the form on the ICONS DIY page. Sign-in links go only to people already on a show's team or invited by ICONS, so nobody else can sign in to your show.

Does ICONS DIY edit my episodes?

No. ICONS DIY has no video editor. It brings recording in ICONS Live, comments in ICONS Review and publishing in ICONS Podcast hosting together under one sign-in, so you edit elsewhere, or hand editing to the ICONS team through podcast production.

Can Descript host my podcast feed?

Descript's pages checked in October 2026 describe publishing directly to podcast hosting services, and its help center lists hosts such as Buzzsprout, Captivate, Podbean and Transistor. They did not describe Descript hosting your RSS feed itself. ICONS DIY uses ICONS Podcast hosting for the feed.
